Artist's Description

Inspiration was taken from the real-life act of resistance and demonstration of bravery made by Ieshia Evans in Baton Rouge.

I used Black 3.0, which absorbs up to 99% of visible light, to represent police brutality. In that darkness, the police come heavily clad in body armor and weapons. On the right, the resistance stands unarmed. Her power and resolve emanate in waves of color and light. Her dress is emblazoned with the names of so many lives cut short, awaiting justice. Under the press of her resolution, the oppressor stumbles backward.

The names on her dress are few in comparison to the actual loss of lives, but I did my best to say their names in the 2”x7” space without making them illegible.
